Guardian No. 516…tilling the ancient soil of the heart

Once upon a time…there was a content woman who chose to live a simple life, and then one day I recognized myself in her…

French knots circle a tiny mirror that reflects your own image. It is stitched onto hand-dyed, sunshine yellow, vintage linen fabric. Hand-felted, curled wool roving, intertwined with vintage millinery stamen, creates a tousled head of hair.

Hand-stitched french knots line up across her wings, as tidy as the rows in her vegetable garden. A rambunctious mix of cotton patterned fabrics echoes this Guardian’s love of all things growing. Her dress has a vintage crocheted lace collar, and a cheerful vintage flower button emerges from her happy heart. She wears an apron created with strips of striped fabric interlaced with chunky ceramic bees. Teeny vegie shoes root her firmly in the earth…

Inspired by my maternal grandmother…this Guardian takes flight on a re-purposed bed spring emerging from a hand-painted reclaimed wood block base standing 22″ x 10″ x 10″. Sewn to the back of the Guardian’s right wing is a tiny bell, representing my mother’s playful spirit. It’s gentle sound is a reminder to listen to the whispers of your heart.
