Each of my figures is intuitively created. Their essence revealed through symbolism.
An eclectic range of ethnicity among the Guardians is captured through the use of hand dyed linen for their faces. Their unique personalities emerge as I call upon my needlework skills acquired over a lifetime with intricately-detailed hand stitching on their bodies and wings, using embroidery, thoughtfully sought out beads, and found organic objects–including bones, sticks, feathers, and salvaged rusty bits. Felted un-spun dyed wool is manipulated to reflect each figure’s wild nature. The Guardians joyfully take flight into the world on re-purposed bed springs emerging from hand-painted wood block bases.
The bell attached to the back of each Guardian’s wing, represents my mother’s playful spirit calling you to listen to the whispers of your heart…the place of shared wisdom where ancient memories are stored and shared by all souls..
